Since 2023, over 112 bills have been introduced across 29 states and in the U.S. Congress aimed at restricting Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives in higher education.
As of January 3, 2025, 14 of these bills have been signed into law by governors: two in Florida, two in Texas and one each in the Dakotas, Tennessee, Utah, Alabama, Idaho, Indiana, North Carolina, Iowa and Wyoming. A bill in Kansas has also become law without the governor's signature. The majority of these bills are still progressing through state legislatures.
A comprehensive list of states where DEI bills have been introduced, passed, or failed is available here.
