Senate Bill 2247 (Signed into law)
In January 2023, State Sens. Bob Paulson, Randy D. Lemm, and Michael A. Wobbema, and State Reps. Scott Dyk, Bernie Satrom, and Nathan Toman, all Republicans, introduced a bill that would ban mandatory diversity training and the use of diversity statements in hiring at public colleges. In April, Gov. Doug Burgum, a Republican, signed SB 2247 into law. It went into effect in August.

North Dakota governor Doug Burgum signed into law on Monday a “specified concepts” bill banning educational institutions from asking students or prospective employees about their commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. It also prevents public higher education institutions from requiring noncredit diversity training of any students or employees.

North Dakota's Republican Gov. Doug Burgum signed a bill into law that restricts transgender health care in the state, immediately making it a crime to give gender-affirming care to people younger than 18.

What it means

Under Senate Bill 2247, signed into law on April 24, 2023, students, professors, and other employees of higher education institutions in North Dakota cannot be asked about their ideological or political viewpoints. Additionally, public institutions cannot conduct mandatory training that includes "specified concepts," like the belief that "an individual, by virtue of the individual's race or sex, is inherently privileged, racist, sexist, or oppressive, whether consciously or subconsciously."
